Bad breath is often caused by plaque, not flossing properly, decaying teeth or an illness of the lungs or intestines. Even diabetes in some rare cases can give the breath a chemical sort of smell. There is also the build up of bacteria in the mouth as well which can be taken care of by proper nutrition, exercise and cleaning the teeth/mouth regularly. Regardless of this, there are still times when the breath is less than desirable and here are a few ways to keep bad breath at bay or to take care of the problem altogether.
1. Baking soda – brushing with baking soda or putting a bit of baking soda in water for a gargle.
2. Water – Regularly drinking water and swishing for about 20-30 seconds with water and then spitting – repeat once or twice daily.
3. Fresh vegetables – Is an excellent idea for keeping the body clean and the breath smelling nice. They also aid in cleaning the teeth. Carrots and celery are the most recommended for cleaning the mouth.
4. Cheese – Eating cheese fights plaque and harmful bacteria in the mouth and digestive tract.
5. Aromatic spices – Chewing on spices such as fennel, clove or cardamom after meals will clean the mouth and aid in freshening the breath.
6. Salt Water – A simple salt water gargle of water with some table or sea salt added will kill harmful bacteria in the mouth and throat. Warm water will increase the efficiency of the salt’s cleansing power.
7. Homemade mouthwash – Using a couple of drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil and perhaps some food grade hydrogen peroxide (3%) in a bottle of water for an all natural homemade mouthwash is also a very effective method for combating bacteria and bad breath.
